Kentucky Drug Abuse: Knowing More About an Erectile Dysfunction Drug

Carisoprodol (C12H24N2O4) is a potent and relatively inexpensive skeletal muscle relaxant primarily used to diminish the pain and soreness caused by musculoskeletal injuries such as strains, spasms, and sprains.

This medication may also be used for the treatment of lower back pain disorder set off by its effectiveness in increasing the range of motion and in relieving stiffness from the body which can be attributed to the drug’s muscle relaxing effect. Studies show that carisoprodol is significantly more beneficial in relieving the symptoms of acute lower back pain disorder compared to batabarbital and propoxyphene.

Additionally, this drug also generates mild antipyretic, anticholinergic, and analgesic properties. Carisoprodol is marketed under the more popular brand names: Soma, Carisoma, Rela, Soridol, Sopridol, and Sodol.

Dosage and Administration

Be reminded that the patient should first seek the advice of a medical professional before using carisoprodol. He must inform his doctor of his medical history particularly if he suffers from any of the following:

• kidney or liver disease
• epilepsy or any other seizure disorder
• porphyria
• blood disorders
• asthma
• allergies

Some drugs can increase or diminish the effectiveness of carisoprodol. It is therefore necessary to inform the doctor about each and every prescription / OTC medication used by the patient (vitamins, minerals, and herbal remedies included). It also necessary to first inform the doctor before taking any new medication.

Never increase the patient’s prescribed dosage. In case the patient forgets to take a dose, be sure that it is taken as soon as recalled provided it is within the hour. Otherwise, pass over the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. The patient should never double dose to make up for the missed dose.

To avoid stomach upset, it is best that this medication be taken during or immediately after meals.

Carisoprodol must be stored at room temperature away from light and moisture.

Side Effects

Somnolence (drowsiness) and ataxia (poor body function coordination) may occur upon taking this drug. As a result of these side effects, caution must be exercised in activities warranting alertness such as driving for example.

Alcohol intake must be limited during medication. A pregnant patient must observe caution and she must ensure that the risks and benefits have been weighted carefully before taking carisoprodol. This holds true for lactating mothers as well.

Other side effects include but may not be limited to the following: dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, depression, irritability, tremor, rapid heart rate, blurred vision, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, hiccups, heartburn and stomach pains.

If these symptoms persist, consult the doctor immediately.

Other Information

• Studies and case reports have shown the high potential for abuse and dependence when taking carisoprodol. Nonetheless, this drug remains to be the preferred treatment for severe musculoskeletal pain in the US.

• The legal status of carisoprodol in some states (Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Hawaii. Florida, Kentucky, Oklahoma, New Mexico) is “Prescription only”

• The onset of action of this medication is relatively swift, approximately thirty (30) minutes upon intake. Minor side effects can last between two to six hours.
