Louisville Drug Treatment Help: Help Your Acne With Benzoyl Peroxide Combination Therapies
It has long been known in medicine, that combination therapy works best for a multitude of conditions. For example, obstinate headaches can be treated with combinations of aspirin and paracetamol in the same prescription. It is also the case in treating acne, that, combination therapies work very well.
So with resistance to antibiotics being a mounting worldwide issue, following the very extensive use of topical and systemic antibiotics for acne vulgaris. Benzoyl peroxide can decrease this reliance on antibiotics in the treatment of acne. Benzoyl peroxide does have a good long term safety and efficacy track record and has been a mainstay of treatment now, for many years in concentrations of 2.5%, 5% and 10%. These concentrations are equally effective at treating inflammatory acne, however, higher concentrations are associated with some adverse effects such as severe inflammation. Conversely, it has been shown by medical researchers in the Division of Dermatology, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY 40202, USA, that the effectiveness of Benzoyl peroxide to be more potent if used in combination with topical retinoids than on its own (1). The researchers carried out a 16-week evaluation of the antimicrobial efficacy of clindamycin phosphate1% and Benzoyl peroxide 5% gel as compared to a clindamycin phosphate 1.2% tretinoin 0.025% gel. While subjects in both groups experienced reductions in total Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) counts, the Benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin phosphate group produced greater reductions of bacteria throughout the study. Furthermore, overall reductions in the number of clindamycin-resistant and erythromycin-resistant P. acnes occurred only in Benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin treated subjects.
So now it has been shown to be the case, in treating acne vulgaris with combinations of Benzoyl peroxide 5% and clindamycin phosphate 1% good results follow. These findings suggest that treatment of moderate to moderately severe acne with Benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin, achieves an important target in acne treatment–maintaining reductions in P. acnes counts and offsetting the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. These factors, combined with a quick action, low skin irritation, and a simplified treatment programme, are important factors to both patients and doctors in the management of acne.
